That, along with other touches like the nightly diner routine, suggest that the McCall we’re seeing is a deliberate creation, a disciplined latticework to keep the old McCall at bay at first, and then later to contain him.Īnd to his credit, Washington himself seems to get this. Even when he’s walking away from a tanker ship he’s about to blow sky high, that’s what McCall’s wearing. The Equalizer loses a lot of suspense because of how imperviously superhuman McCall seems, but Csokas as Teddy almost levels the playing field.Īs for McCall himself, someone on the production made the excellent decision that, no matter where he goes, he’s wearing the same get-up: dark high-end button-down tucked into dark slacks with a belt. He plays Teddy as a slick sociopath with a terrifying capacity for violence. Along with Washington himself, Csokas is the best thing about the movie. ![]() Teddy is McCall’s mirror opposite a fixer for the vicious and the powerful rather than the forgotten and the everyday. Like every newly-minted superhero ever, McCall suddenly and improbably finds himself surrounded by low-level crime.īut meanwhile, the Russian mob is not happy, and they send in Teddy (Marton Csokas, whom fans of The Lord of the Rings films will recognize, minus the elfin trappings) to deal with the problem. This act opens a psychological door for McCall, and he begins using his abilities to help out others in trouble. So McCall decimates the mobsters in their posh office in a scene of kinetic and unnervingly bloody violence. And that’s pretty much McCall’s world: the job and the diner.īut Teri also earns her living as a prostitute, and one night the Russian mobsters who employ her beat her senseless for an infraction. Sometimes he discusses his latest novel with Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz) a young woman who’s also one of the diner’s night owl customers, and who harbors dreams of being a singer. The books are from the list of the 100 books everyone should read, which his wife almost made it through before the marriage ended. He sets his utensils just so and the waiter pours him some hot water for the tea. By night he rarely sleeps, and instead visits the corner diner, bringing a book and a bag of tea. By day, he works at the local Home Depot knock-off. McCall is a quiet and disciplined man living in a small apartment in the city. Unfortunately, what Fuqua and Washington deliver here is a film that’s effectively executed, yes, but also brutal, joyless, ugly and morally mediocre. And since the director is Antoine Fuqua, and McCall is played by Denzel Washington, I was hopeful. I’d never seen it, but the premise is basically that of Burn Notice, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I didn’t realize this until a few days before I saw it, but The Equalizer is actually based on a 1980s television show about a former covert operations officer – like Liam Neeson in Taken, a man with a particular set of skills – who puts up newspaper ads offering to help people in trouble.
